Dr. Tim Phillips

Meet the friendly staff at Desert Valley Equine Center!

Dr. Tim Phillips

Dr. Tim Phillips was raised on a Montana cattle ranch owned by his family since the late 1800’s. The ranch is located in Central Montana in the high plateau region on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains. Dr. Phillips has had a lifelong connection with horses and livestock. He attended Montana State University, majoring in pre-med (there was no pre-vet curriculum at that time). He was accepted to the Colorado State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970 where he completed his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. After graduation in 1974, he moved to Oregon to begin his practice career in Portland under the mentorship of Dr. John Metcalf, one of the Northwest’s first exclusive equine practitioners.

A 26-year career in the Portland area practicing equine medicine and surgery was followed by a move to a quieter, sunny central Oregon in 2000.

Dr. Phillips has a strong interest and background in lameness diagnosis and treatment. Numerous clients bring him horses for care as well as for pre-purchase evaluations. He has flown to many locations in the West to examine horses for purchase over the years. Reproduction, as well as routine dentistry, are also integral areas of his practice expertise.

Continuing education and training in the latest methods are a large part of Dr. Phillips professional interests. He is a career-long member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) as well as the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Dr. Phillips currently serves on the Board of Ethics for the AAEP. He was a founding member of a small group of veterinarians that started the Northwest Equine Practitioners Association (NEPA). He is a past president of NEPA and currently serves on its Board of Directors.

A lifelong horseman, Dr. Phillips team ropes for recreation. A Gold Card member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association he served as a team roping director of the Columbia River Circuit for a number of years. While no longer competing in rodeos he is still very involved with rodeo, having been the attending veterinarian for the Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo for many years and is currently the veterinarian for the Sisters Rodeo.
